"RATP's heritage is not its private property. Everyone has the right to get an access to this huge Parisian heritage (...). RATP is proud (...) to give the opportunity to any visitor from Paris, the Ile-de-France region (...) and every guest from the whole world, an access to this part of this heritage."

Jean-Paul Bailly, RATP's CEO. Quoted in "Le Patrimoine de la RATP" (Flohic Editions, 1996).

WELCOME!

Paris would not be Paris without its typical places of interest, monuments, districts, special atmosphere... and Metro! The Paris metropolitan railway is a part the city's wonderful heritage. Like NYC and the subway, Paris and its Metro are so intimately linked that it is quite hard to imagine one without the other.

The Paris metropolitan railway (commonly called "Metro") has been running for almost a century, linking every part of the city and its surrounding areas. The Metro is a part of the spirit of Paris.

You say "Paris", you think "Eiffel Tower", but you also picture the wonderful Art Nouveau Metro entrance at Porte Dauphine or Abbesses station (near Montmartre). Guimard's Metro entrances are probably one of the best ambassadors of Paris worldwide. In such typical entrances as may be found in New York City (MoMA - Museum of Modern Art), Montreal, Lisbon (Portugal), and Mexico City, each were given a Guimard entrance as a cultural and partnership gift. And if you are visiting Paris Las Vegas, you may recognize shapes of Guimard shelters at the gaming tables!

It is commonly said that Paris is the city of the arts, theatre, film, gastronomy, culture, luxury, etc. Paris scenery has very strong symbols, and the Metro is a full part of this representation. That is the permanent link between the past, present and future. Everyone thinks of the Metro and it can be considered as a monument by itself. A moving monument in fact!

Trains, typical entrances, stations, architecture, signs, etc. The Metro is a powerful symbol of the City of Lights. Apart from this historical background, the Metro is also a place full of mysteries...

This is how the idea of creating a Paris Metro website came out. Well, just hop in, browse this site, and open your eyes! There is so much to discover.
