Update: Natalie Merchant's new album, "Ophelia", has been released.
I fell in love with Natalie Merchant's first album, "Tigerlily", and her
beautiful voice. Natalie Merchant was previously known as the singer and songwriter
of the "10000 Maniacs". They made a big impression for their "unplugged" prestation
on MTV, and the record of this show has been their last before Natalie Merchant went
her way.
On this way, she also left social claims to adopt more personal themes for her songs, saying that she's more inpired as a songwriter to talk about people's feelings. I agree. It's of no use to be heavy or do ugly sounds to be meaningful. I don't like moralist lessons, but if humane feelings are expressed nicely I can be touched like anyone. And it doesn't have to be soppy neither.
I'm a bit bothered to write this because it sounds a bit like what has to be said, but on the other side, in her life it seems that she's really involved in fights for environment, social stuff...
"Tigerlily", Natalie Merchant, 1995, Elektra Records:
San Andreas Fault
Wonder
Beloved Wife
River
Carnival
I may know the word
The letter
Cowboy Romance
Jealousy
Where I go
Seven Years
I like "Tigerlily" because it's fresh but not too light, kind of dreary but cheering. Just my 2 cents.

I've put the lyrics of some of her songs in "L.A.K. likes it"
